Sandstone Tiles
Sandstone gets its name from its composition of sand-sized grains of rock, organic material and minerals. Like our limestone tiles, our sandstone tiles are naturally formed from sedimentary rock. Both sandstone and limestone are made of soluble calcium minerals. While limestone is formed millions of years ago from the skeletons of sea animals, sandstone is shaped from the breakdown of larger rock over time. Because of this, sandstone has unique stratification patterns and this is one of the key visual differences between sandstone and limestone.
Sandstone colour range
Depending on the composition of sandstone, the colour may vary. Although typically light tan in colour due a composition of light coloured minerals, other elements can create alternate colours. For example, shades of red are often caused by iron oxide (rust) in the sandstone. At Artmar, we offer sandstone in varying shades of browns, golds, pinks, greys and greens.
Characteristics
Sandstone is a popular paving material from ancient times, admired for a number of reasons. Beyond their natural beauty, they are also a practical choice as an indoor or outdoor tile. Firstly, they are slip-resistant. Therefore, they are a very popular choice for use in wet areas (such as swimming pool edges). Secondly, they can withstand the harshest climates, increasing in value and aesthetic appeal overtime. Therefore this makes sandstone tiles outdoor a great choice. Lastly, they have a uniquely beautiful, weathered and patterned look.
As a landscaping and decorative stone, sandstone is full of character. Known for its unique, striated weathering patterns, sandstone adds an aesthetic which brings out the best in the surrounding design elements of your interiors or exteriors. Our range at Artmar Natural Stone offers a unique appearance and easy workability that continues in adding wonderfully toned and textured surfaces in a variety of settings.
